Description
'Dakota Jewel' is an early maturing, medium yielding cultivar with round smooth tubers and bright red skin. Vines are vigorous with a semi-erect growth habit and have red-purple flowers.

Utilization
'Dakota Jewel' is suitable for the fresh tablestock market. Its bright red skin color retention and long dormancy make it suitable for packing from long-term storage. It is suitable for boiling, use in soups, stews, and for baking when a sweeter, waxier texture is desired.

In field observations, 'Dakota Jewel' appears somewhat resistant to common scab, silver scurf and powdery scab; further evaluations are ongoing.

Susceptibilities
Susceptible to foliar late blight; expresses typical symptoms of bacterial ring rot.

Other Comments
Exhibits strong dormancy, thus, may exhibit erratic emergence. Procedures to encourage dormancy break may be warranted. 'Dakota Jewel' is sensitive to metribuzin applications.
