'ND Redbarn' dark red kidney bean (RFP-345)

Description

‘ND Redbarn’ is a new dark red kidney bean cultivar developed by the Dry Edible Bean Breeding Program at North Dakota State University and released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 2023. ND Redbarn comes from the cross USDK-CBB-15/ND061206. ND061206 is a dark red kidney breeding line from NDSU originally considered as potential cultivar release because of its superior agronomic performance and intermediate resistance to bacterial diseases. However, it had very late maturity. ND061206 was obtained from a complex cross series involving other well-known kidney cultivars such as Foxfire, Montcalm, Redhawk, and Red Kloud, among others. It also includes some older breeding lines from NDSU that showed overall superior agronomic performance and disease resistance.

Across all trials, ND Redbarn has shown significantly higher seed yield than most commercial cultivars. In addition, seed shape is more appropriate for the kidney market class compared with Talon DRK, previously released by NDSU. ND Redbarn has resistance to bean common mosaic virus, some tolerance to white mold, intermediate resistance to Common Bacterial Blight, and intermediate resistance to root rot complex.

To help ensure genetic purity, 'ND Redbarn' is protected under PVPA Title V (certificate No. pending) and must be sold as a class of certified seed.
