'ND Rodeo' slow darkening pinto bean (RFP-346)

Description

‘ND Rodeo’ is the product of the cross of PT10-27/ Lariat. Lariat is a pinto cultivar released by NDSU in 2009 (Osorno et al., 2010). Breeding line PT10-27 is a slow darkening pinto initially developed by Dr. Phil Miklas (USDA-ARS). The complex cross involves multiple pinto cultivars (Quincy, Montrose), breeding lines as well as some germplasm developed from interspecific crosses with scarlet runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus L.).

Across all trials in the region, ND Rodeo has shown significantly higher seed yield than commercial slow darkening pinto cultivars and slightly higher seed yield than conventional pinto cultivars. In addition, ND Rodeo possess significantly larger seed size (expressed as 100-seed weight) compared with commercial slow darkening cultivars.  It has resistance to bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and intermediate resistance to common bacterial blight (CBB).

To help ensure genetic purity, 'ND Rodeo' is protected under PVPA Title V (certificate No. pending) and must be sold as a class of certified seed.
