'ND Spilde' oat (RFP-348)

ND Spilde is a spring oat with good yield potential, low proportion of thin kernels, unique crown rust resistance, and good test weight. It has exhibited very good grain yield (110%) of Leggett and usually the highest yielding variety in North Dakota Oat Variety Trials. Its large white kernels with a low proportion of thin kernels should be attractive to the oat milling industry. The milling industry requested large kernels and low thin proportion to improve milling efficiency. ND Spilde has good lodging resistance and is relatively late flowering.

The oat was name ND Spilde in honor of Dr. Leroy Spilde.  Dr. Spilde had a long career at NDSU serving as the director of the Agronomy Seed Farm for many years and then as director of the Foundation Seedstocks Program.

To help ensure genetic purity, 'ND Spilde' oat has been protected under PVPA Title V (certificate no. pending) and must be sold as a class of certified seed.
