Prairie Stature® Oak - Quercus x bimundorum ‘Midwest’ (RFM-38)
Description
Prairie Stature® Oak is a deciduous tree with a distinctive and refined dense pyramidal form. It is an excellent cold hardy hybrid oak selection with semi-glossy emerald green foliage that changes to a brick red in autumn. The foliage is mildew-resistant during the growing season and generally will retain tannish leaves into winter. It is believed to be a hybrid with English oak (Quercus robur) x white oak (Q. alba) parentage. This oak hybrid is an excellent choice for landscapes in USDA zones 3-5 and is available in the commercial nursery trade utilizing clonal propagation methods. Prairie Stature® has a moderate growth rate and is faster growing than the native bur oak (Q. macrocarpa). It will reach a mature height of 40 feet with a spread of 30 feet. It is very adaptable to many different soil conditions including both dry and moist locations, clay soils and high pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will thrive in inner city environments. Prairie Stature® is an excellent choice for boulevards or as a shade tree. This introduction was selected from germplasm received in 1972 as Q. robur (Ames 2859) through the USDA-ARS Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) from the North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station (Ames, IA) as part of the NC-7 Regional Woody Ornamental Trials program.
